Do Electric Lawn Mowers Make Sense For Regular Yard Maintenance?

Electric lawn mowers are very popular these days but does that mean you need to ditch your perfectly good gas powered one? While it is more convenient because there will be no more running out of gas or oil halfway through the job, electric mowers are more expensive so that initial outlay of cash might not be a wise investment. If you are on the fence in regards to whether or not you should purchase an electric lawn mower, it can be helpful to take a closer look at what it can offer you.

Electric Mowers

In addition to never having to worry about keeping that little red gas can full, an electric mower also doesn't have spark plugs, fuel filters, or oil to worry about. Since they don't consume fossil fuel, no carbon monoxide and dioxide is emitted, making them environmentally friendly. Furthermore, if it seems like you are always up mowing your lawn at the break of dawn, the neighbors will be happy with your electric mower since they are much quieter than a traditional gasoline model.

It is important to note if you have a very dense, thick lawn, an electric mower might not be able to handle the job. One important thing to remember is that you must be very careful never to mow when the grass is wet, and take extra precautions to avoid any standing puddles or other damp areas while the mower is plugged in, as electricity and water are never a good mix.

Cordless Electric Mowers

For those folks who don't have access to conveniently located exterior electrical outlets, are concerned about running over the electrical cord while the mower is operational, or have a postage stamp sized yard, a cordless electric mower is very practical. They combine all the same benefits of no gas, oil or spark plugs with the convenience of never having to worry about destroying the cord if you run over it, or wasting time flipping it from side to side depending on your turning radius. A cordless mower will run approximately an hour on one charge depending on the thickness of the grass, so it only wouldn't be a practical investment if you have a yard that is big enough to require more than an hour to charge.

Bottom line, electric lawn mowers are a good option for regular yard maintenance as long as your grass isn't too dense, you have more landscaping, patio and pool area than actual acreage, and, for a corded model, you check first to ensure there are conveniently located electrical outlets.

About Me

Enjoying the Fruits of Your Labor all Year Long

Three years ago, my younger sister graduated from college with a degree in agricultural education. Since this time, she’s taught after-school agricultural classes for both a middle school and a high school. While creating lesson plans, she enjoys developing hands-on projects for her students to engage in. For instance, one of the things she likes to do is teach her students how to make homemade butter. She also teaches them how to create beautiful floral arrangements. However, one of her favorite lessons involves showing her pupils how to cook and can fruit preserves. On this blog, you will discover the best types of fresh fruits to transform into tantalizingly tasty preserves you can enjoy savoring all year long.
